The Cupra Formentor is the first model from the SEAT performance brand. It looks great inside and out on the right road. The prototype version of the Cupra Formentor compact SUV was revealed in the year 2020, and production begins in September 2020. The SUV is sold as the "Coupe SUV" of the Spanish car manufacturer. This Formentor SUV is also available as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

As you'd expect from the copper Cupra badge, the Formentor sports plug-in hybrid exterior styling catches the eye. In short, it's beautiful! The plug-in electric SUV is positioned to combine efficiency and performance, including better fuel economy and reduced tailpipe emissions.

The Formentor PHEV has emissions of up to 32 g (CO2/km) compared to 193 g (CO2/km) for the Formentor VZ3 TSI 4Drive Petrol 310 variant, with over 80% reduction in emissions. The Cupra EV has claimed a fuel economy of 235.4 mpg. Although the actual fuel economy is lower than they claimed, using a clean electric model regularly will improve the fuel economy and reduce the cost of driving. If the plug-in hybrid drives the main combustion engine, we can expect the fuel economy to approach 40 mpg.

The Formentor VZe combines an 85kW electric motor and a massive 13kWh battery to boost total output to a more respectable 180kW and 400Nm.

With the hybrid's fuel efficiency and plug-in, it can drive all-terrain without using a single drop of fuel. However, that will be enough for most daily trips, so driving without air and saving money. The cost per kilometer of an electric car is much lower than that of a petrol or diesel car, depending on where and when the electric vehicle is imported.

Although a PHEV cannot be charged using DC fast charging, it can be fully charged in less than four hours using a dedicated home charging station. The Cupra plug-in electric car has a 3.6 kW onboard charger.

The Cupra plug-in hybrid combines the 1.4 e-HYBRID DSG-6 petrol engine with an electric motor. The all-wheel drive plug-in electric SUV can reach 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds. The EV's top speed is 127 mph. Adults in the back seat have plenty of legroom and headroom. Copper details are found throughout the house. However, due to the hybrid, the trunk is smaller (345 L) compared to the petrol Formentor. The Cupra Formentor interior's standard equipment includes a 12-inch navigation system, keyless entry, driver alert system, dynamic traffic sign display, high beam assist, dynamic climate control, etc.

There's a front-facing wireless charger and two USB-C ports, with two more in the back seat. Formentor VZe also has voice commands for basic functions, and you don't need to know Spanish to use it. On the other area where the Formentor beats its sibling Volkswagen in vehicle handling, while some VW Group cars have new but tough capacitive pads to react to finger brushes. The Formentor has the same old-school buttons that work.

A suite of advanced safety technologies including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Radar Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning, Rain Wiper, High Beams daylight, lane departure warning, rear camera, and front and rear parking sensors.

Getting a fuel economy reading on a plug-in hybrid is not easy, because everything depends on whether you plug it in at any time or not.

For example, I covered three full days of family travel without gas by spending the night at home and the day at the office. This helped me get the most out of the 50 km range of the Formentor VZe's 12.8 kWh battery.

And for another three days, I turned it on only one night. So, 200 kilometers traveling on those days consumed 6.6 L in addition to two battery charges. A reverse total time difference of 90 km of pure electricity, suggests an average fuel consumption of 6.0 L / 100 km, which is respectable.

The Formentor VZe hybrid is how we think most owners will drive, and the car does a good job of mixing fuel and electricity to respond to driver input. The Formentor is very quiet in EV mode, so it's easy to hear the gas engine when it's called for help. It's not too loud or obnoxious, it's noticeable after the Serenity EV from the start.

I found the Formentor's suspension to be very comfortable for world-class driving, but perhaps that's down to its sporting claims. Still, I can't help but think that if the driving style matches the VZx, the hybrid should sound more reasonable.

Cupra offers a five-year unlimited warranty and a 12-month/15,000-month warranty. Cars ordered before December 31, 2022, will also receive their first three services free. Customers can pay $1,200 to extend this coverage for up to five years.

My view

The Formentor VZe is a friendly daily driver with a sporty edge. He is happy to weave through the traffic and can dance when the opportunity arises. It's not the biggest inside or the most comfortable passenger, but if you like city trips or Sunday trips, or just driving in general then the Formentor VZe delivers happier than society.

The Formentor's unique exterior and interior design helps it stand out from the crowd, and can make any drive unique. Don't buy it for fuel economy if you don't use it as often as possible.
